Mezzotint is an intaglio printmaking process. Intaglio printing uses a plate with recessed areas. Ink is placed into the recessed areas and the excess wiped away. Paper is placed on top of the ink and pressed with quite high pressure. The ink transfers to the paper, creating a print. A mezzotint print uses different techniques to create the copper plate for the print and can create a print with astonishing depth of tone and exquisite detail.(eHow.com)
